LESSON 19

'a' and 'an' and 'some'

I am sure it won’t surprise you – there are four variations!

UNAS FLORES - some flowers

'A' and 'an' when talking about masculine nouns

Given the previous lessons  you probably will not be surprised to learn that there are feminine and masculine versions of the word, ‘A’ or ‘AN.’

So if you want to say ‘a’ something,’ you need to ascertain the gender of the noun.

If it is masculine, the word for 'A' is UN.

UN is also the word for ‘ONE’ ‘something’ or ‘A’ something when dealing with masculine nouns.  Don’t forget that the word ‘AN’ in English is just a variation of ‘A,’ so UN is the correct word for AN ‘something,’ (if that something is a masculine noun in Spanish).

Por Ejemplo

Un animal - an animal
Un libro - a book
Un chico - a boy
Un perro - a dog

ejemplos - for masculine nouns

UN PROBLEMA

'A' and 'an' when talking about feminine nouns

If you want to say ‘a’ something and the noun you want to talk about is feminine, the correct word to use for ‘A’ is UNA.

You first need to work out the gender of the noun, but if it is a feminine noun, use UNA to say ‘A,’ or ‘AN.’  UNA is also the word for ONE ‘something,’ when dealing with feminine nouns.

If it is feminine, the word for 'A' is UNA.

Don’t forget that the word AN in English is just a variation of ‘A,’ so UNA is the correct word for AN ‘something,’ (if that something is a feminine noun in Spanish).

Por Ejemplo

Una casa - a house
Una Chica - a girl
Una mesa - a table

ejemplos - for masculine nouns

UNA CASA

UNA MESA

AN APPLE

UNA CAJA

the words for 'some' - masculine nouns

If you want to talk about nouns and there is more than one – you are talking about ‘some’ not A or AN.

So you would not say ‘a dogs,’ or, ‘a books,’ or ‘a trees.’
